More progress needed or American women

-

Dear Editor: America has come a long way since the Declaration of Independence in 1776, written by white men with property, with no mention of women when they were considered less than half a person, similar to blacks and Native Americans.

It took many generations before women could vote. They persisted through the abolition of slavery; fought shoulder to shoulder for desegregation and voting rights, against wars, for marriage equality, and in 2018 ran for offices across American politics.

Now more women graduate from college than men, and in most families with two earners make more than men in spite of being paid 80 cents to the man’s dollar.

Women have more social skills, and are better at getting along and getting things done at home and in the workplace. More women are in corporate board rooms than ever and occupying the corner offices.

Still, American women are far behind the world in electing a female president. I have read that in this most recent election, more women decided to vote differently from their husbands than in the past. Every woman I know was passionately engaged in election — volunteering. donating money and making themselves visible, like the ones who stood chanting in front of Rep. John Faso’s Kingston office every Friday.

All my children and their spouses are passionate about their family, community, school and now politics.

Viva femme! Thomas Koshy Kingston
