Village police Friday arrested an Ellenville man on charges that he stabbed another man who was having a relationship with his wife, authorities said.

The Ellenville Central School at 28 Maple Ave. was placed on lockdown at 1:30 p.m. following reports of a stabbing and a man with a gun in the front yard of 30 Maple Ave., near the school campus.

While en route to the scene, village police officers saw a man carrying a bloody knife and took him into custody without incident. The suspect, identified as David Lloyd, 38, of 132 S. Main St., Ellenville, was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

Police said a second suspect, who was reported to be armed with a pistol, had fled in unknown direction. Ellenville Police Chief Phil Mattracion called for the Ellenville Central School to be placed on lockdown as a precaution, but police quickly determined the second man, Alexander Padilla, 31, of Ellenville, had been taken by private vehicle to Ellenville Regional Hospital for treatment of multiple stab wounds.

State police in Ellenville confirmed that Padilla was at the hospital, and held him pending further investigation. The lockdown was subsequently lifted as village police and Ulster County sheriff’s deputies cleared the three school buildings and assisted in the students’ dismissal from the district grounds.

Ellenville Police were assisted by the state police troopers and Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and its canine unit, county District Attorney’s Office and Detectives Forensic Investigation unit of state police in Middletown.

No firearm was recovered after searches by police. Padilla was subsequently transferred to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, where he was undergoing surgery Friday night, police said.

Lloyd was arraigned by Village Justice Matthew Parker and sent to the Ulster County Jail without bail pending a court appearance at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19.
