James F. Maloney, 61, of the town of Ulster

TOWN OF ULSTER >> James F. Maloney, 61, Town of Ulster Assessor and Ulster County Legislator, died Thursday, July 11, 2019, at HealthAlli­ance Hospital, Broadway Campus.

Born Sept. 26, 1957, in Kingston, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Crumley) Maloney.

Jim had served as the Town of Ulster Assessor and as an Ulster County Legislator for many years. As a legislator, Jim previously served as Vice Chairman of the Legislatur­e, past Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Economic Developmen­t, Tourism, Housing, Planning and Transit Committees, and the past chairman of the Town of Ulster Republican Club. Ulster County Legislator Kenneth Ronk said that Jim “always put people first.” He was a strong advocate for the local county volunteer fire department­s, securing many grants for their companies. As a member, Jim also raised money for Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Previously, Jim owned the Governor Clinton Restaurant and worked as a private assessor. He was also a member of the Ruby Rod and Gun Club. When it was time to unwind from work and politics, he enjoyed his annual trip to Puerto Rico with Brenda.

Surviving is his wife, Brenda Maloney; his sister, Kathy Jerent and her husband Rich; brother and sisters-in-law, August Hof and his wife Beth Hankin, Barbara Scheffel, and Donna Brennan; and his canine companions, Spencer and Jenny. Eight nieces and nephews also survive.

Jim’s sisters, Jessica and Christine, and brother-in-law, William Brennan, all died previously.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are under the guidance of Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc., 27 Smith Ave., Kingston (www.jvleahyfh.com).

Jim’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. The funeral procession will form Monday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church. Final prayers will be offered at the Wiltwyck Community Mausoleum.
