The Republican, Conservative and Independence parties have until July 29 to field a candidate to replace Maloney.

Republican, Conservative, and Independence party leaders will have until July 29 to field a candidate to replace former Legislator James Maloney on the November ballot.

Republican Elections Commissioner Thomas Turco said county party leaders were sent notices Friday informing them of the vacancy and starting the 10-day clock for committees to meet and choose a new candidate.

Maloney, 61, died on July 11, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

A town of Ulster resident, Maloney represented county Legislature District 4, which comprises part of Ulster and all of the town of Kingston.

He was first was elected to the Ulster County Legislature in 2003. He served one twoyear term before losing a re-election bid in 2005. He then was reelected to the Legislature in 2007 and every two years after that. In all, he served just shy of 14 years.

Maloney had been chosen by the Republican, Conservative, and Independence parties as their candidate in the November election.

Democrats have tapped former Legislator Brian Cahill as their candidate.

Turco said the three parties who endorsed Maloney must file a notice naming their party’s pick with the Board of Elections by July 29. If any of the three parties fail to, no one’s name will appear on their ballot line.

Under the Ulster County charter, the Legislature has 30 days from the date of the vacancy to appoint a successor before the November election.
