Ivanka gives Kingston an accidental shout-out
In congratulating Prime Ministerelect Boris Johnson, the president’s daughter accidentally referred to ‘the United Kingston.’
Have the British invaded Kingston again?
One might have thought so after reading a Tuesday morning tweet by Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter.
“Congratulations @ BorisJohnson on becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingston,” she tweeted shortly after 8 a.m., after Tory leader Boris Johnson was declared the new prime minister of Great Britain.
Numerous news outlets in the U.S. and Britain reported the mistaken tweet, which Trump corrected to say “United Kingdom” within minutes of posting it — but not before screen captures of the Tweet were widely shared on social media; and not before she took considerable ribbing for it online.
Trump has more than 6.7 million Twitter followers. (Her father has almost 10 times as many.)
At least one Kingston business owner saw a marketing opportunity in the Twitter slip-up. Diane Reeder, who runs Kingston Candy Bar on Wall Street in the city’s Stockade District, quickly created an Earl grey tea-frosted doughnut emblazoned with a Union Jack and called it “Hello Boris.”
But no, we haven’t gone back in time to 1777, when British troops sacked Kingston during the Revolutionary War and burned almost all of its buildings to the ground. And yes, Mayor Steve Noble is still the elected leader of Kingston — united or otherwise.
