Black Maria Film Festival in Rhinebeck celebrates short films
WHAT: Black Maria Film Festival
WHEN: Friday, Aug 2, at 8:15 p.m.
WHERE: Upstate Films, 6415 Montgomery St. (U.S. Route 9), Rhinebeck
DETAILS: Named after Thomas Edison’s film studio, dubbed the “Black Maria,” because of its resemblance to the black-box police paddy wagons of the same name, the festival features a collection of award-winning works, including animation, narrative and documentary films chosen by the festival jury. Immediately following the screening, Festival Director Jane Steuerwald will conduct a questi0n-and-answer session with the audience with filmmaker Seth Kramer and writer/performer Ann Talman.

Powerhouse Season concludes with ‘Goddess’
WHAT: “Goddess” WHEN: Saturday, July 27, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 28, at 2 p.m.
WHERE: Martel Theater, 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie
WHEN: A young man returns home to the African coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya, to marry his betrothed and step into his family’s political dynasty. When he visits a steamy Afro-jazz club, the stomping ground of his youth, he finds himself drawn to a beautiful singer.”Goddess” is a story of love, destiny and the spirit world. The cast features Phoenix Best, Rodrick Covington, Amber Iman, Janelle McDermoth, Drama Desk Award winner Abena MensahBonsu, Adesola Osakalumi, Lance Roberts, Avery Smith and Antoine L. Smith.
