CABINS COMING?
Permanent structures could replace tents for luxury camping at Hutton Brickyards
Permanent cabins could replace the tents that initially were proposed for expanded luxury camping at the Hutton Brickyards property along the Hudson River.
Zach Hall, a project manager with Kristina Dousharm Architecture, told the city Planning Board on Monday that the owners of the property at 200 North St. were proposing to build 24 cabins and an open pavilion for luxury camping, also known as “glamping.” He said the new proposal is in line with improvements the Planning Board previously approved for the Hutton Brickyards site but with some adjustments to account for feedback from the operators of the glamping business.
“It’s fairly straightforward,” Hall said.
Hall said the property owners also acquired 188 North St. An existing building on that site will be renovated for use as the check-in and lodge for the glamping, he said. Hall said a commercial kitchen in the building would be used for the glamping operations, too. A pedestrian path would lead from the checkin area to the glamping cabins, he said.
There currently is no proposed use for an existing banquet hall building on the property at 188 North St., Hall said, though he noted probably would provide a supportive use to the glamping operation.
Following Hall’s presentation, the Planning Board unanimously adopted a resolution reaffirming its role as the lead agency in the environmental review of the project. The board also voted unanimously to refer the site plan amendment application to the Ulster County Planning Board for feedback.
Hall said each of the cabins would have a bathroom and sleeping area with a deck facing the Hudson River. Each cabin would be a separate unit and would not contain cooking facilities. “They’re sleeping units,” Hall said. The Hutton Brickyards property is owned by MWest Holdings of California. It once was the site of brick manufacturing just north of Kingston Point.
Under MWest’s ownership, the site has been used for a food and flea market, a high-end craft and design fair, various special events and concerts.
Bob Dylan performed two shows there in 2017.
