Judge candidate says he’ll move to town in time

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. >> Town justice candidate Kevin Kelly said Tuesday that he plans to have a New Paltz street address by Election Day.

He previously said he would move to New Paltz from his current address in neighboring Gardiner in “a couple more weeks or a month and a half or so.”

Kelly must live in New Paltz prior to Election Day in order to take office if he wins his upcoming race against incumbent James Bacon. Moving in “a couple of weeks” would put Kelley right up against the deadline; “a month and a half” would disqualify him.

Kelly lives at 143 Farmers Turnpike in Gardiner but used a New Paltz post office box as his address on his nominating petitions to run on the Green Party and Working Families lines. Bacon will be on the Democratic line.

Kelly did not disclose where his New Paltz residence will be, or exactly when he will move there, but said he “will be qualified to be on the ballot.”

“I will take the residence that I’m setting up [in New Paltz], and I’m going to have two houses while I’m moving,” he said Tuesday.

Kelly is the one of two justice candidates in Ulster County to be running in a town where he doesn’t currently live. Julius Collins lives in the village of Ellenville, in the town of Wawarsing, but is running for a judgeship in neighboring Shawangunk. Unlike Kelly, however, Collins said he has no plans to move, meaning he will not be allowed to serve if he defeats eight-year incumbent Michael Voss.
