Documentary on FDR cabinet member to be shown in Hyde Park
WHAT: Screening of “Summoned: Frances Perkins and the General Welfare” WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m.
WHERE: Henry A. Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, 4079 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park
DETAILS: The library and museum presents an exclusive pre-broadcast film and discussion of a new national public television documentary about Frances Perkins, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Cabinet. She became the driving force behind Social Security, the 40-hour work week, the eight-hour day, minimum wage and unemployment compensation. After the screening, filmmaker Mick Caouette, Frances Perkins Center Board Treasurer and former President and CEO of the Roosevelt Institute Christopher Breiseth, and Perkins’ grandson Tomlin Perkins Coggeshall will discuss the making of the film and her legacy. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Hudson Valley Folk Guild event takes place Nov. 2
WHAT: Hudson Valley Folk Guild event
WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 2, with sign up for open mic starting at 7 p.m. and performances starting at 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills, 320 Sawkill Road, town of Ulster
DETAILS: The Hudson Valley Guild’s Kingston chapter continues its 2019-20 coffeehouse series with Andy Shapiro as the featured performer. He was part of the Boston music scene in the ‘70s and ‘80s in the locally renowned band “The Catch.” Open-mic performances will take place before and after Shapiro’s performance. Admission is $6, $5 for Folk Guild members and seniors.
