Mount Academy to play Red Hook for MHAL title
WALLKILL, N.Y. >> It will be Mount Academy against Red Hook Thursday for the Mid-Hudson Athletic League’s girls soccer championship.
Both teams advanced with semifinal wins Monday night with Red Hook edging Wallkill 2-1 in overtime and Mount Academy shutting out Rhinebeck 2-0.
The teams play for the title 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Wallkill.
The Panthers scored in the second half to force overtime, with Grace Hennig winning it for Red Hook on a header off a corner kick.
Marilyn Decker and Gina Fischli both scored for Mount Academy (12-0-1). Sophie Keiderling had three saves and Rhinebeck goalie Helen Fleming made four in the tightly-contested match.
Saugerties 5, Highland 1
At Saugerties, The Sawyers secured a sectional berth with a league win over Highland.
Julia Quinlan had two goals and an assist, Makenzie Below scored and distributed three assists and Ashlynn DeRonda and Erin Dudzic also tallied to lead
Saugerties. The Sawyers evened their record at 7-7 overall and 5-5 league.
Brooke Harris had the lone goal for Highland.
Abby Below made 13 saves for Saugerties, while Highland’s Lea Schlosser deflected 11 shots.
New Paltz 2, Ellenville 1
At New Paltz, Maddy Garcia
scored on a one-touch shot off a pass from Nyah Cunniff early in the match and Shawn Stern connected off Caroline Giuliani’s centering pass in the 67th minute
for a big insurance goal for the Huguenots (9-6).
Jessica McHugh got Ellenville on the board off Sydney Franza’s assist with nine minutes left in regulation.
Adriana Anderson kept things tight for Ellenville (96) with 11 goalie saves. Vivi Kay made three for New Paltz.
