Snowshoe hikes scheduled for Jan. 20
WHAT: Martin Luther King Day hikes
WHEN/WHERE: Monday, Jan. 20, 9:30a.m. to 1p.m for the Minnewaska hike; 10a.m. to 12:30for the Sam’s Point Hike.
DETAILS: For the Minnewaska hike, join Laura Conner, an environmental educator, for an approximately two-mile snowshoe outing in the Peter’s Kill Area. Recommended for physically fit adults and children older than 8 years old. For the Minnewaska hike, a limited number of snowshoes are available to borrow. Otherwise, snowshoes can be rented for $5 per person. The Sam’s Point hike, which meets at the Sam’s Point Visitors Center, features a three-mile loop on snowshoes to view Lake Maratanza, a sky lake where winds blow almost continuously, creating snowdrifts that can reach incredible heights. The hike also stops at Sam’s Point Overlook with a great view of the Wallkill Valley, the Catskills and more on a clear day. For the Sam’s Point hike, snowshoes are available for rent for $5 per person. If there is insufficient snow cover, both programs will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18 for both programs. Pre-registration is required for both programs.

English country dance in Port Ewen on Jan. 4
WHAT: English country dance WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 4, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., with workshop at 7 p.m. WHERE: Reformed Church of Port Ewen, 160 Salem St., Port Ewen.
DESCRIPTION: Enjoy dancing to traditional tunes played by local musicians. Dances will be taught and called by Dorothy Cummings. Come alone or bring friends. Wear comfortable shoes. Potluck refreshments will be served at the break. The workshop at 7 p.m. is important for newcomers to better understand the vocabulary of English country dance. This dance is sponsored by Hudson Valley Community Dance, a volunteer organization. The cost is $10, $5 for full-time students.
