A positive step toward reversing climate change

-

Dear Editor, At this time of year, with our longest nights, we look to faith and traditions, creating light in the darkness and seeking renewal before the new year begins.

But lately, I am struggling to see a bright tomorrow because of the harm we have done to our precious planet, especially in the form of climate change. I know many others join me in this concern.

Thankfully, I have found that joining with others and taking action has brought a ray of light and hope. I joined Citizens’ Climate Lobby—a non-partisan, national organization with local chapters throughout the U.S.

CCL works on solving the climate crisis through outreach and lobbying that is respectful and positive. We are advocating for a national bill, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763), which we believe is the best first step to addressing climate change. We’re not alone in this: It’s been backed by over 3,000 economists, and has bipartisan support. The Act would reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by almost 40 percent by 2030.

Becoming an advocate for a livable planet is not difficult. Please take a look at the Citizens’ Climate Lobby website, and consider coming to our next chapter meeting at Kingston Library at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020. We’d love to see you there!

With every person who joins and with every action they take, no matter how small, we create points of light that add up, generating the will to enact this best first step against climate change.

May we all gain renewed faith in our ability to join together to protect our beautiful planet. And may the new year be a time for taking action toward that end.
