Impeachment not about reversing 2016 election
Dear Editor: Joan Glaser’s recent letter (“‘Never Trumpers’ trample on 63 million voters”) claims Democrats want to steal back the election that Donald Trump won fair and square.
This impeachment has nothing to do with the election.
He is charged with withholding funds that were approved by Congress. He did this — a clear abuse of power — to leverage Ukraine’s newly elected president into announcing an investigation intended to gain an advantage in the 2020 election. He sent his personal lawyer to Ukraine, not an ambassador or other administration official. That suggests that the visit was based on personal motives.
The other charge against the president — obstruction of Congress — is happening right before your eyes. Subpoenas to John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney and others, and for documents related to the case, have been ignored. This is the definition of obstruction. Trump claims to want all the evidence presented, but he has refused to provide it.
I’m sure that, like Ms. Glaser, the vast majority of Trump voters support the president because of a carefully reasoned intellectual argument in favor of a traditional conservative ideology. As such, I would hope they would look at the evidence in the charges against the president with an unbiased eye for the truth, though I suspect many people will dig in their heels and refuse to accept that their president is corrupt.
By the way, if being against Nazis, racists, etc., makes me a “classist-elite,” I’m happy to accept that label. Aren’t you? Steve Massardo
