‘She Kills Monsters,’ a dramedy play, at McKenna Theatre

-

A young woman channels her inner geek and warrior using the board game “Dungeons & Dragons” in SUNY New Paltz’s production of Qui Nguyen’s dramedy play “She Kills Monsters.”

The production, directed by Michael Barakiva, runs through Sunday, March 8, at the McKenna Theatre on the college’s campus at 1 Hawk Drive, New Paltz.

Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saurdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Agnes Evans is grieving the death of her younger sister Tilly when she discovers her late sister’s “Dungeons & Dragons” notebook and discovers her sister’s passion for fantasy role-playing games. She’ll embark on a world filled with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres and new truths about Tilly’s true character.

“I have been dying to direct this play since I saw the premiere in New York City all those many years ago,” Barakiva said in a prepared statement. “Before gaming was cool, before geeks were in, before a d20 was a fashionable accessory, Qui wrote this action-packed queer fantasia as an homage to all of us for whom games were an escape from reality.”

Tickets are $18 for the general public, $16 for seniors ages 62 and older, SUNY New Paltz faculty and staff, SUNY New Paltz alumni and non-SUNY New Paltz students; and $10 for SUNY New Paltz students.

This story includes discussions of sexuality and death.
