Standoff with armed man ends peacefully
NAPANOCH, N.Y. » A 56-yearold man who fired his shotgun near some workers, then barricaded himself in his home, was taken into custody after hours of attempted negotiations on Friday, March 20, according to the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 report of shots fired in the area of Sholam Road, near its intersection with Woodland Avenue in this town of Wawarsing hamlet, at about 11 a.m. Friday.
Initial reports were that the man, whose name has not been released, came out of his home and fired two rounds from a shotgun in the general vicinity of some tree service workers. Then he went back inside his residence and barricaded himself.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, members of the Ulster County Emergency Response
Team and Ulster County Crisis Negotiation Team tried to made contact with the man.
Finally, after several hours of attempting contact, deputies took the man into custody. He was taken to HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley’s Broadway Campus in Kingston for further evaluation.
The Sheriff’s Office has obtained an “Extreme Risk Protective Order” to temporarily prohibit the man from possessing any firearms, pending a hearing, authorities said.
The case remains under investigation and criminal charges are anticipated, the Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement.
Deputies were assisted by the New York State Police, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, Ellenville Rescue Squad, Mobile Life Support Services and the Napanoch Fire Department.
