An approaching storm could bring 6 to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow to higher elevations in western Ulster and western Greene counties Monday morning through early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency has issued a winter storm warning for western Ulster and western Greene counties, where precipitation is expected to remain as snow from 6 a.m. Monday to 2 a.m. Tuesday.

No advisories were issued for the eastern part of the two counties, where mostly rain was expected.

Two to six inches of snow could fall in lower elevations in the western areas of Greene and Ulster counties.

The forecast called for only about an inch of snow in Kingston, where temperatures were expected to warm to 38 degrees Monday afternoon.

Most of the precipitation was expected to come in the form of rain, but could switch back to snow in

Kingston after 7 p.m. Monday, adding less than a half an inch of additional snow accumulation.

The storm is expected to pull out of the region very early Tuesday.

Even so, the weather service said the weight of the snow could produce isolated power outages in some areas.
