Gas prices mixed in Mid-Hudson
Gas prices rise in the state and the country but drop in Ulster and Dutchess counties.
Gasoline prices are rising in the state and the nation, but are mixed in the region, GasBuddy.com reported Monday.
Local averages Monday morning, according to GasBuddy, were $2.15 per gallon in Ulster County, down 7 cents from a week earlier; $2.18 in Dutchess County, down 1 cent; and $2.18 in Greene County, up 8 cents.
The New York state average Monday was $2.16 per gallon, up 1.1 cents from a week earlier, GasBuddy reported. The national average rose 5.5 cents per gallon, to $1.96.
“Average gasoline prices across the U.S. continue to recover as more motorists take back to the roads as states relax previous shelter-in-place orders and begin filling their tanks, driving demand to continue rising,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“Since demand is a major ingredient in what drives gasoline prices and demand is likely to continue to rebound, it is also pushing the price of both crude oil and gas prices higher, “DeHaan said. “Unfortunately, thus far, refiners have started to input more crude oil into their refineries, but there has been some lag as refiners remain cautious on flooding the market with unwanted products. As long as COVID-19 cases continue to drop over time and provinces re-open, I suspect it is only a matter of time before average price hits the $2 per gallon mark again- which could happen as early as this week.”
New York state’s average gasoline price Monday was 0.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 74.9 cents lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy. The national average Monday was 22.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 86.6 cents lower than a year ago.
Over the past five years, the average gasoline price on May 26 in New York state has been: $2.91 per gallon in 2019, $3.06 in 2018, $2.51 in 2017, $2.43 in 2016 and $2.85 in 2015.
