Aging detectors

- Hints from Heloise

We change the batteries in our smoke detector regularly, but how often should we change the actual detector?

Smoke detectors are appliances, and they wear out. There is a sensor inside the unit that has a lifespan (typically seven to 10 years), after which it won’t work correctly anymore.

Keep in mind, just because the unit beeps when you test it, doesn’t mean the alarm will sound when there’s smoke or a fire. It’s best to replace the entire unit every seven years. Not sure when your smoke detector was replaced? It’s time.

P.S. Practicing fire drills with the family is a good idea. Make sure everyone has two ways to get out of the house, and decide in advance of a meeting place, preferably down the street a bit. Once you’re out, you’re out. Do not go back into the house for any reason!

FUN SNACK

For a delicious, fun, possibly messy snack for the kids, drizzle a peeled banana with chocolate syrup, then roll in puffy rice cereal. Cut in half for younger kids.

BEACH STUFF

Are you planning a beach getaway after being at home this spring? What are some items that you’ll need to pack?

Here are some essentials: * Sunscreen

* Umbrella

* Bottled water and healthy snacks

* Change of clothes and lots of towels

* Lifejackets and flotation devices * Personal fan to cool off with * Container for personal items * Floppy hat * Baby wipes

* Sunglasses

* First aid kit

Being prepared will make the day more pleasant. Before everyone piles back into the car, sprinkle baby powder or cornstarch on their feet. Wet sand will slide right off. FOOD JOURNAL

Do you need to lose a few pounds? A good first step is to write down EVERYTHING you eat every day. Then record how you feel afterward. Are you energized, or do you feel sluggish? Look for patterns to help with making better choices.

HUMMINGBIRD HELPER

DEAR HELOISE » How can I attract hummingbirds to my yard?

— Janice in Virginia Janice, we love these marvels of nature and want to keep them humming around our homes. A great way to attract them is with my nectar recipe. To make it, you’ll need:

One part white granulated sugar (do not use honey, brown sugar, molasses or any sugar substitute) to 4 parts boiling water.

Carefully stir the mixture until sugar is dissolved and allow to cool before filling a specially designed hummingbird feeder. Now, sit back and watch!

SPOOLIES RULE

DEAR HELOISE » I always save the mascara wand from tubes of mascara. They come in handy, after rinsed off, to brush eyebrows and to tame stray head hairs with hairspray.

— Gay in Texas Gay, these are often called “spoolies.” You can buy them new at the drugstore, but a clean, repurposed one works just fine.
