State reopens more of its campgrounds
The Devils Tombstone, Kenneth Wilson and Mongaup Pond sites are among the locations where closures are ending.
Additional state campgrounds in the Catskill and Adirondack parks will reopen July 1 to reservation holders for the 2020 season, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation said Friday.
In the Catskill Park, the sites being opened are the Devils Tombstone Campground and Day-Use Area in Hunter, the Kenneth L. Wilson Campground and Day-Use Area in Mount Tremper, and the Mongaup Pond Campground and Day-Use area in Livingston Manor.
The sites have been closed since early in the COVID-19 pandemic. With the reopenings, visitors must adhere to social-distancing rules and follow cleaning and disinfecting protocols, the DEC said.
Additionally, state lands that were temporarily closed to overnight camping now are allowing it, with the exception of Peekamoose Valley in the Catskills, Evergreen Pond in Livingston County, Otter Creek Horse Trail in Lewis County, and Sugar Hill Recreation Area in Schuyler County. Peekamoose Valley will allow camping starting July 1.
DEC-controlled fire towers, with the exception of Sugar Hill, also have reopened to visitors.
A week ago, the DEC reopened to reservation holders the Bear Spring Mountain Campground and Day Use Area, the Little Pond Campground and Day Use Area, the North-South Lake Campground and Day Use Area, and the Woodland Valley Campground.
