The Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. gas main replacement project is nearing completion, the company said.

KINGSTON, N.Y. » The Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. gas main replacement project, started in the spring, is nearing completion, according to the company.

But more is to come this fall, said John Maserjian, a Central Hudson spokesman.

“Natural gas line replacement projects continue this year in the City of Kingston,” Maserjian said in an email. “Major projects that started this spring are near completion, and several new projects are slated to begin later this summer and fall.”

So far, Maserjian said, Central Hudson has spent $10.5 million on 5.3 miles of natural gas main replacement and 500 service line ones.

Maserjian said the company is coordinating the work with the city’s Department of Public Works.

“We are actively coordinating these projects with the City of Kingston Dept. of Public Works to ensure our work plans are in alignment,” Maserjian said.

A particular portion of the project that was delayed has now begun.

“As an integral part of these projects, indoor work associated with service line replacements and indoor meter relocations that had been postponed due to the (coronavirus) pandemic has now resumed with the gradual reopening of the local economy,” Maserjian said. “Crews are following guidance by state and federal health authorities such as maintaining social distancing when possible, frequently sanitizing hands and tools, wearing face coverings and disinfecting surfaces in the work area upon leaving the home or building.”

Maserjian said additional crew training has also been provided in properly using personal protective equipment to safeguard employees and residents. A video describing these protocols can be viewed at www.CenHud.com/about-us/projects/ Gas-Projects.

Specific projects so far this year in Kingston are:

• New rondabout area: All 3,259 feet of the new gas main is installed, and all 82 services are complete. Final cleanup work is underway and should be completed this week. This project is in coordination with state/municipal paving plans at the Roundabout.

• Broadway/East Chester Street project: 18,000 feet of gas mains have been installed, and 92 of the 331 service lines are complete.

• Mary’s Avenue project: All 2,380 feet installed. There are 20 services that will be completed over the next two to three weeks.

• Pearl Street project: All 3,159 feet of the new main is installed. There are 46 services that will be completed over the next two to three weeks.

Additional projects slated to begin this year include:

• Cummings Avenue, (approximately 203 feet, to begin during the week of July 6).

• Plymouth Avenue project (approximately 735 feet to begin in mid-July).
