ROUNDABOUT ON TRACK
Project set to be completed next year
Construction of the roundabout in Uptown is still on track for completion next year.
State Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Heather Pillsworth said construction is set for completion late 2021.
At the moment, she said, some paving, sewer, and drainage work is being done.
According to Kingston’s roadwork website posting this week sewer installation will begin on East St. James Street and then continue at various locations.
“Drainage installation is almost complete for this stage of construction,” the website says. “The stormwater system will resume on July 27. Broadway is being excavated and graded in preparation for asphalt placement on approximately July 21 as well as the 2B alignment.”

the asphalt paving operations on July 21 and 22. To avoid delays, use alternate routes,” the website says.
Striping and switch over to 2B alignment are scheduled for July 24. At that time, the through traffic pattern on Broadway will change from the south side to the north side.
Work at the new roundabout, to be located at the intersection of Albany Avenue, Broadway and Col. Chandler Drive, began in February.
The roundabout — which planners say will ease traffic flow at the busy and sometimes confusing intersection — is being overseen by the state Department of Transportation, and all of the money for the project is coming from state and federal coffers. The city of Kingston, though, will pick up the tab for underground water and sewer pipe work at the site.
Besides changing the flow of vehicular traffic, the roundabout is to include 10-foot-wide, mixeduse paths for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as raised crosswalks.
Also, signs directing traffic to and through the roundabout will be groundmounted, rather than overhead, as the current signs are.
