Toyota shows out with 2020 4Runner

- Marc D. Grasso

It’s about time! In October 2019, Toyota decided it was time we reviewed its TRD Off-Road 4Runner. (Possibly because I gave Jeep rave reviews with its all-purpose Wrangler MOAB.)

I wasn’t impressed by it. Although it delivered great accompaniments, it was lackluster in styling, technology and very “tinny.” A huge disappointment in the 2019 age for all-purpose SUVs.

Now in 2020, Toyota decided it was time to show up or show out, and boy did they! The 4Runner Limited is a long way from the previous 4Runner.

The famed 4Runner, a 36-year-old model that has been a profit-provider for years, brings to the table a powerful 4.0-liter V-6 engine providing 270 hp, mated with a five-speed automatic transmission. Our Limited model in Nautical Blue was quite attractive; the 20-inch wheels were nice and big, filling the squarish fender wells. The interior tinnyness seemed to vaporize one year later. Although fuel mileage is still significantly low for your daily driver, it is in line nicely with the Jeep Wrangler, Chevrolet Tahoe and the recently tested Dodge Durango.

Lets face it, the real definition for this category is multipurpose: family hauling, camper tower, daily commuter, honey-do list completer are all the norm for the large SUV market. Manufacturers have to compete by developing usability around their product; Toyota did just that. The 4Runner boasts comfortable interior seating for seven, with multiple leather color options. Additionally, a nice eight-inch infotainment system that has gone through some significant updates is easy to use.

Automatic running boards were a nice feature as well and for only $1,500.

The four-wheel-drive system is appropriate for New England, and simple to use.

Interior trim and moldings were very upscale and pretty impressive.

There’s no remote start option available for the 4Runner, which would be a great addition, but the 4Runner owner most likely isn’t parking this in the garage.

Everyone has a need for a vehicle that can do it all. The 4Runner is one of those vehicles. From the strippeddown SR5, starting out in the mid-$30s, all the way to the Nightshade Special Edition, the 4Runner is a great option for consumers.

We were very disappointed in the 2019 4Runner, but in 2020 — I am impressed. It explains why the 4Runner has been around for so long and will be for years to come.
