A Saugerties man has been charged with the felony of vehicular manslaughter in connection with an April crash on U.S. Route 9W in the town that killed a passenger in the car he was driving, police said Monday.

Daniel Kellogg, 22, of 2741 Route 9W, was arrested about 2:15 p.m. Monday in the town of Ulster, according to the Saugerties Police Department. The department said Kellogg was taken into custody after a vehicle in which he was a passenger was pulled over by police.

Saugerties police said they received information that Kellogg planned to leave Ulster County this week and that they confirmed he had bought a oneway bus ticket to Arizona, from where he planned to travel to California.

Kellogg was driving a 2000 Honda Accord in the area of 3112 Route 9W in Saugerties about 1:20 a.m. April 22 when the car went off the east side of the road and struck a utility pole, police said at the time. Kellogg’s passenger, David M. Mattison, 29, of Kingston, was killed, police said.

Police offered few details about the crash the day it happened, and they did not provide Kellogg’s or Mattison’s names at the time, but on Monday they said Kellogg was under the influence of both alcohol and prescription drugs when his car struck the pole.

Kellogg was injured in the crash, had to be extricated from the car and was flown to Albany Medical Center for treatment. Police have not described his injuries. Mattison was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kellogg was arraigned Monday in Saugerties Town Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, police said.
