Ellen Gambino, a vice president of Dutchess Community College, has been appointed acting president while the Board of Trustees conducts a search for a permanent new leader, the school announced Tuesday.

Gambino is taking the reins from Pamela Edington, who retired in July after serving as DCC president for six years.

Gambino has been at the two-year college since 2006 and has held several academic leadership roles. Since 2015, she has been college provost and vice president of academic affairs and student services.

A press release from DCC said Gambino has extensive experience in curriculum design, student success and retention, strategic planning, budget management, academic assessment and workforce development. She led the development of DCC’s new associate degree program in public health and two offerings awaiting state approval — hospitality and tourism, and aviation maintenance technician, according to the college.

A Hudson Valley native, Gambino holds an associate’s degree from DCC, a bachelor’s degree from SUNY New Paltz, a master’s degree from Pace University and a doctorate from St. John Fisher College.

“I am extremely proud and honored to lead Dutchess Community College during this transition,” Gambino said in a prepared statement. “With the support of our faculty, staff, alumni and Board of Trustees, I am confident that the college will emerge from these challenging times stronger and better positioned to continue to fulfill our mission to provide a highquality education that is affordable, accessible, equitable and inclusive.”

The college said is expects to conclude its search for a new president in the spring of 2021.

Edington became DCC’s fifth president, and the first woman to hold the position, in the summer of 2014.
