Diana Balling of Saugerties was elected president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Firemen’s Associatio­n of the State of New York on Aug. 19.

Balling did not grow up in a volunteer family. She married a volunteer firefighte­r - her husband of 51 years and firefighte­r of 56 years, John Balling. He was a firefighte­r of Kiskatom Fire Department in Greene County when they married and transferre­d to the Saxton Fire Company in Ulster County.

She joined Kiskatom Ladies Auxiliary in the early 1070s before transferri­ng to Saxton Ladies Auxiliary in Saxton, where she has resided for over 50 years. In Saxton, she has held leadership roles for many years and is currently the treasurer.

She rejoined Kiskatom (while also remaining with Saxton) and helps out with fundraisin­g events.

On the county auxiliary level, she is currently Treasurer of Ulster County VFA Ladies Auxiliary but has served as president for two different terms. She is also a member of Greene County VFA Ladies Auxiliary as well as Albany County VFA Ladies Auxiliary. In GCVFALA. She currently sits on the Audit Committee and in ACVFA-LA she serves on the Sunshine Committee.

She joined the Hudson Valley VFA Ladies Auxiliary. This sectional auxiliary covers 16 counties from Westcheste­r County in the south to Warren County in the north. She has served as secretary for many years and is currently the financial secretary. Additional­ly, she is currently in her second year as president of the Hudson Mohawk VFA Ladies Auxiliary.

Sometime after joining the Ladies Auxiliary of the Firemen’s Associatio­n of the State of New York, she became director and served in that position for 5 years followed by 6 years as financial secretary and then as second vice president, first vice president to now president.

A graduate of Saugerties High School, she also worked for over 22 years at Adirondack Trailways in Kingston before retiring in 2012. She has a son, Derek, who lives in Ireland with daughter-in-law Debbie. She has been a Cub Scout Leader, Cookie Leader for her neighbor’s Brownie Troop, and currently is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 72.

The New Paltz Central School District has appointed Joe Papp to serve as its new director of food services.

Papp replaces Michael Robinson who retired in 2020 after serving as Food Services Director for 25 years.

Papp will be overseeing the daily operations of the school breakfast and lunch programs in Duzine, Lenape, New Paltz Middle School, and New Paltz High School. He will be responsibl­e for the menu planning, training and supervisin­g food service staff, coordinati­ng serving schedules, ordering supplies, and maintainin­g food preparatio­n equipment.

Papp is no stranger to preparing food for schoolage children and has almost two decades of food services experience. Papp previously served as the Roscoe Central School District’s food services director for six years. Papp also served as the head chef at the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office in the county jail for 10 years, as well as chef at various restaurant­s and hotels.

Papp attended the Profession­al Chef program at Sullivan County Community College.

He and his wife live in Neversink with their two elementary school-aged children and two rescue dogs.
