Newburgh man faces charges in siege at U.S. Capitol
NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) » An Orange County resident was arrested Saturday for his alleged participation in the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol.
The FBI confirmed the arrest of Edward Lang in a tweet from its New York City office.
“Decisions have consequences. Edward Lang is in custody for the ones he made during the assault on our Capitol,” the statement from Assistant Director in Charge William Sweeney Jr. said.
Lang, 26, was arrested at his residence on Liberty Street in the city of Newburgh, which was searched by law enforcement, NBC in New York reported.
Lang’s next-door neighbor, Joe Kanupp, said the FBI told him to stay in his apartment and he watched through a window as agents carried items out of Lang’s residence. Kanupp also said he did not know Lang.
Lang appears in video from the Capitol in which he describes seeing a woman trampled in the crush of people. A screenshot from his Instagram account depicts rioters attempting to violently breach the Capitol
captioned “THIS IS ME,” prosecutors said.
“I was the leader of Liberty today. Arrest me. You are on the wrong side of history,” Lang captioned a video he posted. In another video from the insurrection scene, Lang swung a baseball bat at police officers, striking at least their shields, prosecutors said.
Lang is charged with assaulting an officer, civil disorder and other crimes. He is expected to appear in federal court in White Plains via teleconference on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan told NBC.
It was unknown Saturday whether Lang had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
At least four other New
York residents have been arrested in recent days as investigators throughout the country pore over video and photos to identify those involved in the attack in Washington.
“We will continue to track down and hold accountable those who attempt to violently subvert” the Constitution, Sweeney’s statement said.
