Final beam placed for hospital’s expansion
KINGSTON, N.Y. » Construction workers on Thursday placed the final steel beam on the frame of what will be a 79,000-square-foot addition to HealthAlliance Hospital’s Mary’s Avenue Campus.
The beam — adorned with the signatures of HealthAlliance employees, volunteers and donors, and other community members — was hoisted and placed during a “topping-off” ceremony.
The hospital addition and related renovations in the existing building have a price tag of about $93 million and are key to the plan by HealthAlliance’s corporate parent, Westchester Medical Center Health Network, to have all inpatient services in Kingston on one hospital campus. They currently are spread across two campuses, the other being the former Kingston Hospital building on Broadway, about half a mile away.
The Broadway Campus is to be converted into a multidiscipline outpatient “medical village” once all inpatient services have relocated.
The two-story addition being built on the Mary’s Avenue property is to be completed in the spring of 2022. It will adjoin the site’s main hospital building, of which 48,000 square feet is undergoing renovation.
Included in the project is a new 25,000-squarefoot emergency department, which will replace the emergency room on the Broadway Campus. The previous emergency room in the Mary’s Avenue building, formerly Benedictine Hospital, was closed when Benedictine and Kingston hospitals joined under the HealthAlliance umbrella more than a decade ago.
The Mary’s Avenue project also includes a new intensive care unit, a new cardiovascular lab, a maternity center (currently available only on Broadway), a new imaging department, a new laboratory and pharmacy, and a new lobby area comprising central registration and admitting, financial counseling, family support services, a gift shop and waiting areas.
