50 active cases of COVID at college

Latest round of test results adds 7 students, 1 employee to roster of people infected in SUNY school’s community

The SUNY New Paltz community had 50 active cases of COVID-19 as of Friday after seven students and one employee were newly reported as having contracted the illness, the college said.

Of the 50 people currently infected, 47 are students and three are employees, the college reported on its website.

Three of the eight most recent positive tests were conducted on campus and five were off-campus, the college said. It also said three of the newly infected students are isolating on campus, while the other four students and the one employee are doing so off campus.

Among the 47 currently infected students, the college said, 15 are in quarantine on campus and 22 are isolating off-campus.

The college had has 82 students and 22 employees test

positive for COVID since Jan. 1, though students didn’t return to campus from their winter break until Jan. 17.

During the first half of the current school year — from Aug. 24 to Dec. 31, 2020 — a total of 75 people in the college community contracted the virus. Thirty-one tested positive

from March 1 to Aug. 23, 2020.

County numbers

Ulster County on Friday reported 1,530 active cases of COVID-19, up slightly from the 1,523 reported Thursday but still sharply lower than the Jan. 30 peak of 2,622.

The county reported 36 additional recoveries from COVID, for a yearlong total of 9,365, but also one additional COVID-related death, bringing

the toll to 235 since the start of the local outbreak last March.

Ulster has had a total of 11,130 cases of COVID since the start of the pandemic, including 44 added to the county on Friday.

The county said its latest rate of positive tests for COVID is 4.5%, in line with the recent range of 2.6% to 5.7%.

Dutchess County reported Friday that it had 1,080 active cases of COVID, up from the 1,070 it

reported Thursday.

Dutchess also reported a decline in daily hospitaliz­ations, from 52 to 50, and no additional deaths. The county has had 408 COVID-related deaths since last March.

Dutchess has had a total of 22,678 confirmed cases of COVID since the pandemic began. Of those, there have been 21,188 recoveries.

• Ellenville: One on-site middle schooler.

• New Paltz: One offsite Duzine Elementary School student.

• Pine Plans: One offsite staff member of Cold

Spring Early Learning Center.

• Rhinebeck: One offsite student of Bulkeley Middle School and two on-site high schoolers.

• Rondout Valley: One off-site junior high school student.

• Wallkill: One on-site student at Plattekill Elementary School student.
