KINGSTON, N.Y. » A 19-yearold city resident who shot himself in the neck in an apartment on Broadway in Midtown, apparently by accident, has died, a Kingston police official said Friday.

Raymond D. Robinson died at 6:10 p.m. Thursday, Detective Lt. Thierry Croizer said.

Robinson was a senior at Kingston High School and was due to graduate this coming June, Kingston school district Superintendent Paul Padalino said Friday.

Padalino called Robinson’s death a “terrible, awful situation” and said the district will make counseling available to those who need it.

Kingston High School Principal Vince DeCicco described Robinson as a “very smart young man ... a good kid” with plans to go to college.

DeCicco said Robinson, who played basketball and football on school teams, was “a great guy, very respectful, a hard worker and a good athlete.”

Immediately after the shooting, which happened about 3:10 p.m. Wednesday at 358 Broadway, Robinson was administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation by police officers before emergency medical workers arrived. He then was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway Campus, just a block away, and later was flown by helicopter to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, a trauma center, where he underwent surgery.

Croizer said Thursday that Robinson apparently accidentally shot himself with a handgun belonging to Oryin McLeod, 20, of 358 Broadway. McLeod was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, Croizer said. He said the gun was not stolen but that McLeod did not have a license for it.

Croizer said Friday that while the investigation remains open, there was no change in the case against McLeod as a result of Robinson’s death.

The lieutenant said police “don’t have any idea” why Robinson was holding the gun but that they have gotten “cooperation from some of the individuals that were there.”

Croizer said Thursday that the incident happened “in the presence of other individuals.” On Friday, he declined to say how many.
