After a lifetime of watching “The Price Is Right,” on television, longtime Saugerties resident Alexa “Lexi” Perry, got to hear her name combined with those famous words, “come on down.”

Perry, 27, will appear as a contestant on the long-running game show in the episode that airs Tuesday.

“It was amazing,” Perry said of hearing her name called for a spot in contestant’s row. “Honestly, just being able to audition was a dream come true,” she said.

Perry, who works in partnership sales and divides her time between Saugerties and Los Angeles, said she found her way to the Price Is Right stage after seeing a post on Facebook by someone saying the game show was looking for people to audition.

She applied online and before she knew it, she got an email asking her if she was interested in auditioning her for a spot on the show. Because of COVID-19, Perry was auditioned online. Right before the holidays she learned she had been selected as a potential candidate for the show and in February she flew from New York to Los Angeles for taping (and yes, she had to pay her own way).

Much about the iconic game show has changed as a result of COVID-19: The configuration of contestants row is different, there is no live audience from which the contestants are beckoned to “come on down,” and, much to Perry’s dismay because of social distancing requirements, there is no hugging of host Drew Carey.

But what hasn’t changed, she said, is the rush you get from hearing your name called by George Gray and the excitement everyone shares whenever a contestant is called to the stage.

“Everyone’s so happy for each other,” she said. “It’s incredible how supportive strangers are ... and that genuinely that excited for someone else.”

Under the rules of the show, Perry was unable to offer details about her appearance, including whether she made it out of the contestant’s row to play one of the show’s iconic games.

But she said she believes that her love for shopping could have helped her on the show.

“I am a shopper,” she laughed. “I am the person that will fight to do the grocery shopping. I love grocery shopping.”

“I think all in all I had an idea of what things cost,” she said.

The Price is Right airs at 11 a.m. on CBS. Perry will appear on the episode that airs on Tuesday, March 30.
