- Shaw, PhD, William H.:

RED HOOK- It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of the patriarch of our family, William H. Shaw, PhD. Known to friends and family as Bill, he passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at the age of 79. Bill was born to Harry and Anne Shaw in Brooklyn, N.Y. To Mary Q. Shaw, he was a loving husband of more than 54 years. When he spoke of his wife, he always said he knew she was “the one” from the rst moment he laid eyes on her at St. Bonaventure University in 1964. She was the love of his life. Bill was a doting father of ve children, to whom he taught to always put family rst, and he was like a father to Lourdes Llorens of Cataluña, Spain. He was a beloved grandfather to 10 grandchildren, to whom he taught the ner arts of shing. In addition to his loving wife, Mary Shaw of Tivoli, N.Y., he is survived by his children: Katherine (Joseph) Lasch of Delmar, N.Y.; Mary (Vincent Lawler) Shaw of New York, N.Y.; Edward (Maria) Shaw of Old Tappan, N.J.; Dr. Maureen (Lucas) Terranova of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; and Amelia (Mario Arellano) Shaw of Ecuador. Also his siblings Wayne, Christina, and Susan Shaw; his loving grandchildren Emily and Allison Lasch; Saxton, Sabine and Sterling Terranova; Luna and Stella Braga; Lorenzo Arellano; Kelsey and Hudson Shaw; along with numerous extended family, colleagues and friends. Throughout his career, Bill was a biology professor for many years with Sullivan Community College and Marist College. As a respected academic, he regularly published research on the impacts of climate change on the waters of the Adirondacks. In 1984, he became a Fulbright Scholar and took his family to Lancashire, England for a year, which sparked a love of travel not only for Bill but for his entire family, and also opened his eyes to the wonders of home-brewed beer. Bill was also a friend to many, and had tremendous love and respect for everyone he met. He was seen as a respected community member in the towns where he lived and shed in Ellenville and Tivoli, N.Y. He was devoted to his church, volunteering to deliver food to needy families with St. Christopher’s Holy Name Society. He also volunteered regularly with youth organizations like the Dutchess County 4-H, the Rhinebeck Science Foundation, and Trout Unlimited, combining his love for nature and protecting the environment with his passion for education and y shing. He was an avid traveler and photographer, and is remembered by the communities he met in Spain, Haiti, Mexico, and Ecuador. And of course, he was a great sherman, nding solace in the ick of his y rod on many rivers in New York and Montana. He will be remembered as a man of great integrity, whose heart was as big as his greatest catch. Respects for Bill can be paid on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burnett & White Funeral Home in Red Hook.
