BEVERLY EDITH ELMENDORF

-

SHOKAN- Beverly Edith Elmendorf of Kingston, N.Y., passed into the presence of the Lord on April 3, 2021. She was born to Burr K. and Laura (Moe) Elmendorf in Ashokan, N.Y., on March 14, 1930. She is predeceased by three siblings, Doris Davis, Frances Elmendorf, and Clarence Elmendorf. She was 91 and had been living at the Golden Hill Health and Rehabilitation center, where she was treated with kindness, and her sweet spirit won the hearts of the care givers there. For the past several months, her older sister Doris Davis resided there, and the two sisters spent their last days together. Her roommate and beloved sister passed two months ago. An older sister, Frances Elmendorf, passed many years ago. The young siblings enjoyed a family closeness with their parents in their Shokan home, where they picked berries in the back yard and enjoyed roller skating in their front yard on Route 28, before it became a major thorough fare. She would walk to her grandparents’ store, H. C. Elmendorf & Son Mercantile, which became Winchell’s Pizza. The building was originally moved from the reservoir basin by her grandfather using draft horses. Situating the enormous building in its present location, he established his store, and thus the small hamlet of Ashokan grew around it. Beverly graduated from Kingston High School and was employed by Ryan Insurance until her retirement. She was a devoted daughter and took care of her mother until she passed away. She loved God and her Savior, Jesus Christ, who she would credit for her perpetual joy and sense of belonging. She attended several different area churches. She is known for her kind heart and beaming smile. She enjoyed shing for brook trout in the local streams and walking around the majestic Ashokan Reservoir, where her father was one of the early watershed inspectors. Surviving are four nephews: Danny C. Elmendorf and his wife Deborah, Terry L. Elmendorf and his wife Suellen, Stephen G. Davis and his wife Valerie, and Wesley K. Davis and his wife Sharon, who passed away previously, and 13 great-nieces and nephews with their spouses and children. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia. A graveside service will be held at the Ashokan Rural Cemetery, Mountain Rd., Shokan, on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at 10 a.m. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Broadcasting, PO Box 1520, Olivebridge, N.Y., 12461.
