SUNY New Paltz named its first female director of athletics, announcing the hiring of Renee Bostic.

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. » SUNY New Paltz named its first female director of athletics Thursday, April 8, announcing the hiring of Renee Bostic.

“Renee brings to her work a proven track record for excellence,” the college’s vice president for student affairs, Stephanie Blaisdell, said in a press release. “She has dedicated her career to the advancement and success of student-athletes and to building strong and inclusive athletic programs that center scholar-athletes, realize key institutional goals and benefit the larger collegiate community.”

Bostic will assume the post of director of athletics, wellness and recreation on July 1.

She succeeds Matt Giufre, who has been serving as interim director for the 2020-21 school year while the national search was being conducted. The search began when Stuart Robinson stepped down last year after 28 years at New Paltz to become the assistant vice president and director of athletics at New York University.

“I am thrilled to begin my work at SUNY New Paltz in support of my lifelong commitment to building diverse student-athlete communities and moving forward the mission of the Department of Athletics, Wellness, & Recreation,” Bostic said.

Bostic is the first female AD at this NCAA Division III college. New Paltz had previously had a female assistant/associate athletic director. The closest to that role was Yvonne Allenson, who was director of the Division of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation, a now-retired program.

Allenson, who died in 2015, spent nearly 30 years at New Paltz and as that division’s director until her 1994 retirement.

Bostic is a veteran athletic di

rector and former head women’s basketball coach with more than two decades of experience at the collegiate level.

She is currently at Notre Dame of Maryland University, where she was named the college’s first African American director of athletics and wellness in 2018. Prior to that, Bostic was director of athletics and intramurals at Medgar Evers College (CUNY) in Brooklyn.

She was head women’s basketball coach for West Virginia State University (200812), Robert Morris University (2005-08), and Hostos Community College in the Bronx (2002-05). During the summers of 2007 and 2008, Bostic served as a game scout for the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx and Washington Mystics, scouting regional games and preparing reports for both teams.
