Wallkill announces top 2 students in Class of 2021
WALLKILL, N.Y. » The valedictorian and salutatorian for the Wallkill High School Class of 2021 are Conor Warren and Devin Ramos, respectively.
Warren, son of Loraine and Stephen Warren, leads his class with a grade average of 103.29, which he achieved while taking numerous collegelevel and Advanced Placement classes, according to the school district. A resident of Gardiner, Warren said that although he enjoys science and learning in general, he has a particular passion for math.
“I love math classes because they rely on problem-solving,” Warren said in a statement. “It is fun to learn strategies, expand your tool kit, and then see how you can apply this knowledge.”
Outside of the classroom, Warren has been involved in the Leo Club, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, the district said. He has been the Class of 2021 president since 10th grade and is an ex-officio student representative to the district’s Board of Education.
Through his work as a student intern for Climate
Smart New Paltz, Warren helped conduct and present a greenhouse gas inventory for local government operations in the town of New Paltz.
Warren is still waiting to hear from several colleges and universities to which he applied, but he plans to study biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering, and is considering minoring in computer science.
Ramos, son of Steven and Margaret Ramos of Plattekill, has a grade average of 101.40 and had a courseload that included Advanced Placement and college-level classes, the district said.
Ramos was drawn to courses related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), he was on the school yearbook staff for two years,
and he is a member of the high school’s VEX Robotics Team, according to the district.
“Personally, I have found STEM classes the most interesting,” Ramos said in a statement. He said he particularly enjoyed his physics and chemistry classes because of their relevance to astronomy, which he plans to study at Union College in Schenectady.
Ramos said he hopes to work in an astronomy-related field, perhaps at NASA.
