Boil water alert issued in Staatsburg

- By Patricia R. Doxsey pdoxsey@freemanonline.com

The Dutchess County Water & Wastewater Authority has issued a boil water alert for residents in the hamlet of Staatsburg due to a water main break on Old Post Road.

The advisory applies to residents living on Old Post Rd North of Elm Street, Market Street, Church Street, Lee Street, West Elm Street and Mills Cross Road.

The advisory is expected to last between four and five days.

Residents should bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, and cool before using or use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice.

According to a press release issued by the Water and Wastewater Authority on Saturday, Dec. 4, the system lost pressure due to a break in the service line.

When water mains lose pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter your water. Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.

Residents are urged to seek medical advice if they experience any of the symptoms above.

Authority personnel are on-site and attempting to locate the break. Once the line has been repaired, water sampling will be conducted to determine if bacteria or microbes are present.

The Dutchess County Water & Wastewater Authority will inform residents when the boil water advisory is lifted. Residents will be informed when tests show that they no longer need to boil their water.
