Schumer’s actions against filibuster are dangerous
Dear Editor,
In recent days, we have seen actions by senior politicians that should cause concern. Specifically, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., participated in and is taking steps to change political processes for the purpose of implementing legislation that is at best questionable. He is participating in the action to “blow up the Senate” by removing the filibuster.
First, the hypocrisy speaks loudly to us because in the past, he lambasted Republicans who were perceived to change the filibuster process. Second, his purpose is to bully other senators into passing legislation significantly changing voting laws.
Misinformation has been rampant regarding individual state’s voting laws, including characterizing them as “threats to our democracy.” (Spoiler alert: Our form of government is not a democracy.) The legislation to pass so-called federal voter protections does not do as advertised, but more of a concern, federalizes voting, providing a form of soft totalitarianism. Centralizing this kind of power reminds me of “Hunger Games,” and not in a good way. More importantly, it is an unconstitutional power grab. Why is Sen. Schumer so desperate to take these dangerous steps to “blow up the Senate rules” in order to implement legislation that is unnecessary, unpopular, dangerous, and erodes and corrodes the Constitution? His shenanigans are without merit and should be a concern to all of us.
It is clear Sen. Schumer does not have the best interests of the country and Constitution in mind with his actions. He should be removed from office and, in November, every opportunity should be taken to move him into retirement.
