Cairo man raped a pre-teen child over a 2-year period, police say

CAIRO, N.Y. » A joint state police investigat­ion in Columbia and Greene counties has ended with the arrest of a town of Cairo man who is charged with raping and sexually assaulting a child, authoritie­s said Wednesday, May 11.

Celino Reyes, 61, of Cairo, was arrested by state police at Catskill on Saturday, May 7, and charged with rape, criminal sex act (victim less than 11 years of age), course of sexual conduct involving a child, aggravated sexual abuse, predatory sexual assault against a child and sexual conduct against a child less than 13 years of age, all felonies.

On Dec. 17, 2021, state police were notified by the Oregon Child Protective Services Hotline that Reyes had sexually assaulted a minor who had previously lived in Greene and Columbia counties over a span of about two years, police said Wednesday. State police in Columbia County notified Greene County Child Protective Services and learned that they also had received a report that Reyes had sexually assaulted the same minor on numerous occasions.

On Monday, April 25, Reyes was indicted by a grand jury in Columbia County, an arrest warrant was issued and he was arrested and charged with two felony counts of sexual abuse and one felony count of attempted sexual abuse. In April, Reyes was arraigned in Columbia County Court before Judge Richard M. Koweek who released him with a return date of May 31 at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, May 3, New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigat­ion Catskill (Troop F / Greene County) received an arrest warrant for Celino Reyes, for the felony charges of predatory sexual assault against a child and course of sexual conduct against a child.

Reyes was jailed by Greene County in lieu of $100,000 bail or $50,000 bond.
