Police identify three men charged in shotgun killing of female bear
TOWN OF ROCHESTER, N.Y. >> Authorities on Tuesday identified an Accord man as the hunter charged with shooting a female bear with a bow, while also naming two accomplices who used a shotgun to kill the animal.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said after DEC police officers seized the bear’s hide and meat, Devin Lockwood, 26, was charged with possession of a firearm while hunting during the special bowhunting season and taking game other than as permitted by the Fish and Wildlife Law, both misdemeanors. He was additionally charged with hunting with the aid of a pre-established bait pile, a violation
A DEC spokesperson identified Lockwood’s accomplices as Douglas Douglas, 28, of Rochester, and Alexander B. Quick, 23, of Accord.
Douglas was charged with accompanying a person engaged in hunting deer or bear while in possession of a firearm, a misdemeanor. He was also charged with hunting while privilege is suspended, a violation.
Quick was charged with possession of a firearm afield during the bow-only season.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, state Department of Environmental Conservation police officers received reports of the incident in the town of Rochester, according to a DEC newsletter.
A complainant reported that after killing the bear, Lockwood posted several pictures of himself and Douglas and Quick with the bear and a shotgun on social media. The caller told police the same bear had been seen with its cubs, eating out of trash receptacles in the area, the state agency said.
When interviewed by state environmental conservation officers, Lockwood allegedly admitted to shooting the bear as it was feeding on trash and confirmed he and Douglas and Quick had killed it.
Lockwood, Douglas and Quick were released with tickets for Rochester Town Court.
