HELEN SMITH

Fancy Gap, VA - Helen (Swart) Smith, 92, formerly of Saugerties, NY passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at her home in Fancy Gap, Virginia. Born February 1, 1930 in Saugerties, she was the daughter of the late Edna May (Wolven) and Jesse Swart. She graduated from Saugerties High School in 1949 and married Kenneth E. Smith on October 14, 1953. A very talented seamstress, she enjoyed sewing for family and friends. Beginning in the 1980s she worked at Saugerties Town Hall for HUD. She was an avid genealogist and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Virginia. After husband Ken’s retirement from engineering, they moved from Saugerties to Fancy Gap, Virginia in 2005. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Ken and four brothers: Chester, Kenneth, Douglas and Esmond Swart. Helen is survived by her three children Bill Smith (wife Susan), Barbara Rice and Donna Marie Smith; seven devoted grandchildren: Michele Johnson, Randy Groenhof, Maria DellaRocco, Sarah DellaRocco, Rachel DellaRocco, Stephanie DellaRocco, and Erin (Smith) Vergnory; and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Interment was in Mount Marion cemetery on Monday, November 21, 2022, attended by family members. Helen’s Memorial Service, for friends and family, will be held on Saturday, December 10, at 2 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 153 Fording Place Road, Lake Katrine, NY. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s name may be made to either the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lamouree-Hackett American Legion Post 72, or VFW Post 5034, both at 30 John Street, Saugerties NY.
