Registration open for Multicultural Education Conference
Registration is open for SUNY New Paltz’s School of Education’s 28th annual Multicultural Education Conference on Friday, March 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Education professionals, parents, students, and community members are all invited.
LaGarrett King, the director of the Center for K-12 Black History and Racial Education at the University of Buffalo, will give the keynote address, titled “Teaching through Black History: Exploring Consciousness of Blackness and Humanity.”
“King, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized award-winning scholar of Black history education whose research examines the teaching and learning of Black history in schools and society,” a news release said. He has authored and edited numerous books, including “Teaching Enslavement in American History.”
The program includes a number of morning and afternoon workshops to help educators, parents, community members and high school and college students “to learn, generate insights, and connect with others who are working toward equitable educational spaces in which all people can thrive.”
In his work at the University at Buffalo, King supports research projects and teacher professional development activities seeking to improve K-12 Black history education, while helping build a network of people and organizations committed to Black history education.

The conference is presented by SUNY New Paltz School of Education’s Social Justice Educational Studies Program, formerly known as the humanistic, multicultural education program, with co-sponsorship by the Black Studies Department, Campus Auxiliary Services, the Latin American & Caribbean Studies Program, the Office of Alumni Relations & Development, the School of Education, the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program, the Mid-Hudson Migrant Education Program, the MidState Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network, the Mid-Hudson Teachers Center, Ulster BOCES, and SUNY New Paltz.
