Rising Son brings music to Paoli Methodist

-

There’s a joyful noise filling the sanctuary of Paoli United Methodist Church (PUMC) these days, thanks to the talents of their new praise band, Rising Son. The band formed in September of 2014, when church member Terry Derstine felt the pull to do something more with his love of music. It didn’t take long to realize that there were several other members of the church who were eager to join him in his calling, and in no time the musicians were meeting weekly.

Taking on the role of percussionist was Fran Lopez, whose enthusiasm behind the drums quickly earned her the nickname “Animal.” Also joining the group was James “Jimmy” Griffiths, a partner in a local financial firm, who brought with him both a mastery of the guitar and a strong singing voice. And although Derstine had most recently been playing the banjo, he quickly picked up the bass in order to round out the trio’s sound.

The group continued to practice and as word spread of their talent and enthusiasm, they were asked to play during a church service in October. Their first performance consisted of the popular praise song “All the People Said Amen” and a different take on “Amazing Grace” sung to the tune of “House of the Rising Sun”. It was this song that inspired the group to name themselves Rising Son.

The congregation of PUMC appreciated the group’s positive attitude and distinctive approach to praise songs and quickly invited them back the next month. They updated their playlist with yet another mash-up of “Amazing Grace” – this time with The Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” causing Jimmy to joke, “We might need to have a contest to see how many different versions we can do.”

Much like one’s faith, the band continues to evolve and grow. In January of this year, Rising Son gained a new member when Malvern attorney Mark Salvacion and his wife joined the church. Mark accompanies Jimmy on vocals and guitar, adding a wonderful depth and richness to the band’s sound.

Risi ng Son si ngs their praises of the Lord monthly at Paoli United Methodist Church’s 10:30 am service. See them play at the 4th annual Paoli Car Show on Saturday, June 13.
