Ronald ‘Ron’ Freeman Romig of Fleetwood

Ronald “Ron” Freeman Romig, 78, passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Reading Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Jane (Fleming) Romig, who was his high school sweetheart and best friend for 63 years. Also, three daughters, Lisa Ann, wife of Robert Atkins of Millington, NJ, Lori Ann, wife of Neil Citrone of Pennington, NJ, and Robin Lynn, wife of Steven Brownell of Hainesport, NJ; a son, Charles Fleming Romig, husband of Laura (Neale) Romig of Centre Hall, Pa; 13 grandchild­ren, Drew and Amy Atkins, Sydney, Haley, and Marley Citrone, Nicole, Madeline, Jessica, and Samuel Brownell, and Charles S., Kaitlyn, Jackson, and Elizabeth Romig; and one brother, Randall Freeman of Marietta, GA.

Born in Boyertown, Pa, Oct. 24, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles Bean Romig of Boyertown and the late Minnie Mae (Freeman) Romig of Sinking Spring. He was a graduate of Boyertown High School, received his B.S. degree from Bloomsburg State University, and both his M.Ed. and Ph.D degrees from the University of Delaware.

Dr. Romig taught for eight years in the public schools of PA and NJ before completing 32 years as a professor of Biology at West Chester University where he taught courses in Zoology, Environmen­tal Science, and Entomology. He received professor emeritus recognitio­n for his work at West Chester in 1999. Dr. Romig was a research consultant to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelph­ia, and a research cooperator for the U.S. Dept. of Agricultur­e Beneficial Insects Laboratory at Newark, DE. Dr. Romig served a term as correspond­ing secretary for the American Entomologi­cal Society.

Dr. Romig’s research interests and published papers were primarily in the field of classical biological control of harmful insects by use of beneficial parasitic insects, and in studies of radio-isotopes in food chains of selected PA mammals. Dr. Romig was elected for two terms as chairperso­n of the Biology Department at West Chester before going on to serve as the University’s Director of Liberal Studies program.

In retirement, Mr. Romig volunteere­d as a tour guide for the Berks County Heritage Center, as a docent at Reading Public Museum, as a member of the Oley Valley PA German Fersammlin­g Raad, and as a leader of the Oley Valley Pa German Club. Other interests included playing banjo, writing, beekeeping, and cabinet making. He was a member of St. John-Hill UCC.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. John-Hill UCC, 620 Hill Church Rd., Boyertown, Pa 19512. There will be a calling from 9:30-10:30 AM the same day at the church. Burial will be at Union Cemetery.
