Doomed from the start

PHILADELPHIA >> Before the Phillies came to bat, they already were out of the game.

Shelby Miller threw 6 2-3 sharp innings, Jake Lamb hit a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat reeling Philadelphia 3-1 Monday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep.

Jeremy Hellickson (4-6) allowed three runs and four hits before recording an out. Though he rebounded nicely and lasted seven innings, the team’s struggling offense couldn’t bail him out.

“We lost that game in the first inning,” manager Pete Mackanin said.

The Phillies have scored two runs or fewer in seven straight home games.

“We’re looking for someone to get hot,” Mackanin said. “We don’t have a lot of power. This is a good

hitter’s park. We’re just not hitting. We’re guessing too much.”

The Phillies went 0-6 on their first winless homestand of six or more games since Sept. 21-27, 1964, when they went 0-7 at Connie Mack Stadium before losing three more games in a historic collapse from first place.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m a 9 in frustration,” Mackanin said.

Jean Segura led off with a double and scored on Phil Gosselin’s single. Lamb hit The Philadelphia Phillies’ Odubel Herrera beats Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Brad Ziegler to first base for a single during the ninth inning, Monday in Philadelphia. a towering shot off the scoreboard in right for his 14th homer and a 3-0 lead.

“Giving up three is big. If

I would’ve put up a 0, we win 1-0,” Hellickson said. “0-6 on a homestand is not fun. We’re all frustrated.”

The Phillies got their only run in the second when Tyler Goeddel’s double scored Andres Blanco after he started the inning with a double.

Miller left with two runners on in the seventh. Tyler Clippard retired pinch-hitter Jimmy Paredes on a fly ball to end the inning. Daniel Hudson tossed a perfect eighth. Brad Ziegler pitched out of trouble in the ninth for his 43rd consecutive save and 15th this season.

“We need to make adjustments. We need to make adjustments to their

adjustments,” Philadelphia’s Odubel Herrera said through a translator.
