Hurricanes improve to 3-1 on season

The Villa Maria Academy golf squad improved to 3-1 on the season with a 242-288 victory over Merion Mercy Academy on Monday at McCall Country Club. Gianna Ward (43) led the way for the Hurricanes, who had four scores in the 40s. Alla FitzPatric­k shot a 49, which was a personal best.

CONESTOGA 5, GREAT VALLEY 2 >> The powerful Pioneers swept the singles en route to a non-league triumph over the Patriots. Ashley Griffith edged Adira Nair in a No. 1 singles thriller, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Cassidy Landay and Maddie Wood also won single matches for Conestoga. Lindsay Miller and Sadie Buzan won at No. 2 doubles for Great Valley. nipped the Garnet Valley team of Catharine Cai and Izzy Stripling 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Unionville is now 1-0 overall. WEST CHESTER EAST 4, STRATH HAVEN 3 >> The Vikings moved to 3-0 with a tight non-league triumph. East prevailed in two of the three singles matches, with Amanda Nguyen and Maddie Russell each sweating out tough wins in three sets. The doubles team of Jessica Becker and Kristyn Usilton also surived a competive battle at N0. 3.

CHEYNEY NAMES ASSISTANT CROSS COUNTRY-TRACK COACH >> Leander Toney, Jr., has been hired as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Cheyney. Toney, who graduated in 2011 from Indiana (Pa.), as one of the most decorated high jumpers in PSAC history, was an All-American teammate of Cheyney Head Coach Brianna Liebold, at IUP from 2009-11.

“I’m extremely eager for the opportunit­y to join the cross country and track and field program here at Cheyney University and work alongside Coach Liebold,” Toney said. “As teammates during our collegiate careers, Coach Liebold and I were cut from the same cloth, both of us have that competitiv­e nature and desire to win whenever we set foot on the track.”
