Area stores offer free coffee today
Java, caffe, jet fuel, joe, liquid lightning, morning mud, daily infusion, lifeblood and whatever else you want to call it, coffee is, in the words of a major coffee chain, what keeps America running. Day after day, the region’s residents hit their favorite local places for a cup or two – or three or four – of their favorite coffee.
On Thursday, Sept. 29, many of those beloved hot spots will offer a free cup of coffee or other promotional coffee-related deals to customers in celebration of National Coffee Day.
Wawa Inc. said it will offer customers free coffee of any size all day at each of its more than 730 locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. Throughout the day Thursday, Wawa expects to give away more than 2 million free cups of coffee to customers across all of its stores. What makes Wawa’s coffee day celebration unique is the fact that customers can come in multiple times and are able to get any size of free coffee.
“At Wawa we’re always looking to go beyond filling customer orders by fulfilling the lives that we touch every day, so we’re excited to play a part in International Coffee Day by giving customers free any size coffee all day long at all of our locations,” said Chris Gheysens, Wawa’s president and CEO.
Since 2000, Wawa has served more than 1 billion cups of coffee. Within the brewed coffee market, Wawa ranks number one in Philadelphia and number six nationally.
Participating McDonald’s restaurants will also offer free cups of small coffee all day on Thursday in honor of National Coffee Day.
McDonald’s Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region along with Covenant House Pennsylvania and Covenant House New Jersey, the region’s largest shelter specializing in serving homeless youth,
have announced a partnership this week to help serve the young men and women of Covenant House. The partnership will kick off on National Coffee Day, with McDonald’s restaurants across Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey donating 100 percent of all McCafé drip coffee proceeds to Covenant House.
Dunkin’ Donuts, which has offered free cups of coffee in past years, has a new promotion this year. On Thursday, guests can enjoy any medium-sized cup of the brand’s signature hot coffee for the special price of 66 cents at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide to celebrate its 66 years in business.
Swiss Farms, the Delaware County-based drivethru market, will give customers any size and style of hot roasted coffee for free. Additionally, Swiss Farms will roll out a new line of breakfast sandwiches on National Coffee Day, with a special introductory price of $2.
Turkey Hill will be running a Facebook coupon on National Coffee Day, giving customers the opportunity to buy one 16-ounce coffee and get one free on Thursday. Customers must show the Facebook coupon at the register to receive the discount.
Krispy Kreme will not only offer a free small coffee all day from 6 a.m. until closing at 9 p.m., but is also giving customers a free glazed donut to celebrate.
Whole Foods market in Glen Mills is selling its coffee at regular prices on Thursday, but will donate one dollar from every cup purchased that day to the Poverty Alleviation Programs through the Whole Planet Foundation.
Those traveling near a Cumberland Farms, Stewart’s Shops and Peet’s Coffee, among others, also can get their complimentary caffeine fix Thursday. Many companies are also offering online deals for coffee and Keurig pod purchases.
According to a recent Harvard University report, 54 percent of Americans over 18 drink coffee every day and they drink an average of 3.1 cups. The U.S. spends $40 billion on coffee each year, which makes it a commodity second only to oil in value. Sept. 29 is annually celebrated in many countries as International Coffee Day and as National Coffee Day in the United States.
