W.C. East, Villa, D-West, ’Stoga snag field hockey state berths

Ni­cole Fredricks fired home the game-win­ner early in the sec­ond half and the Vik­ings held on to beat ri­val West Ch­ester Hen­der­son, 2-1, in a District 1 2A field hockey quar­ter­fi­nal Fri­day.

Lau­ren Fredricks scored the other goal for the Vik­ings, who se­cured a state berth and will now play Mount St. Joseph’s Tues­day at 3 p.m. at the Prov­ing Grounds fields in Con­shohocken.

East goalie Nikki Bent­ley had 10 saves for the Vik­ings, as East fought off 20 Hen­der­son cor­ners.

Hen­der­son’s sea­son is still alive, since five teams make states in 2A. The War­riors will have to win two games in the play­back round, be­gin­ning Tues­day when they host Bishop Shana­han.

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 1, BISHOP SHANA­HAN 0 >> Ca­ressa Gen­tile had 13 saves for the Ea­gles, but it wasn’t enough as Ju­lianna Kratz scored the win­ner for the Magic. Shana­han faces Hen­der­son Tues­day with the win­ner play­ing for the last state berth on Thurs­day.

“We’ve just got to not let this get us down,” said Shana­han coach Nancy Roselli. “And be­lieve in our­selves. We have re­ally good chances against a team that are still in.”

VILLA MARIA 3, RAD­NOR 1 >> Lind­say Dick­in­son scored twice and Han­nah Miller added the third as the Hur­ri­canes reached the District 1 2A semi­fi­nal and locked up a state berth. Villa will host Me­rion Mercy on Tues­day at 4 p.m.

DOWN­ING­TOWN WEST 2, C.B. EAST 1 >> Ta­tum John­son and Tay­lor Orsi scored the Whip­pets’ two goals as West locked up a state play­off spot and a spot in the District 1 3A semi­fi­nals.

West will play in Tues­day’s semi­fi­nal at Con­estoga. Unionville and CB West will meet in the other semi­fi­nal.

The Whip­pets fell be­hind in the sec­ond half be­fore John­son and Orsi scored in rapid suc­ces­sion, both as­sisted by Romea Ric­cardo.


WHITEMARSH 1 >> Mered­ith Ross had a hat trick and Char­lotte de Vries added two more goals as the Pi­o­neers (19-1) rolled into the District 1 3A semi­fi­nals and earned a state berth.

Con­estoga will host Down­ing­town West Tues­day for a spot in the fi­nal.

Girls Ten­nis

EAS­TON 3, UNIONVILLE 2 >> The In­di­ans swept the dou­bles but fell in the PIAA Class AAA Team semi­fi­nals at Her­shey Rac­quet Club. Anna Nolan and Bai­ley San­tiq­uida won, 6-4, 6-2 at first sin­gles. Cara Freed­man and Erin Fel­ter grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 vic­tory at sec­ond dou­bles.

NORTH AL­LEGHENY 3, WEST CH­ESTER HEN­DER­SON 2 >> Anna Li earned a key vic­tory at first sin­gles as Northa Al­legheny edged the War­riors in the semi­fi­nals of the PIAA Class AAA tour­na­men. Li edged Emma Clark, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Ela­nia Rochford and Mary So­ria dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, then won, 6-2, 6-3, at first dou­bles. Iswarya Vel and Jes­sica Liu cap­tured sec­ond dou­bles in straight sets.
