W.C. East, Villa, D-West, ’Stoga snag field hockey state berths

Nicole Fredricks fired home the game-winner early in the second half and the Vikings held on to beat rival West Chester Henderson, 2-1, in a District 1 2A field hockey quarterfin­al Friday.

Lauren Fredricks scored the other goal for the Vikings, who secured a state berth and will now play Mount St. Joseph’s Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Proving Grounds fields in Conshohock­en.

East goalie Nikki Bentley had 10 saves for the Vikings, as East fought off 20 Henderson corners.

Henderson’s season is still alive, since five teams make states in 2A. The Warriors will have to win two games in the playback round, beginning Tuesday when they host Bishop Shanahan.

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 1, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 >> Caressa Gentile had 13 saves for the Eagles, but it wasn’t enough as Julianna Kratz scored the winner for the Magic. Shanahan faces Henderson Tuesday with the winner playing for the last state berth on Thursday.

“We’ve just got to not let this get us down,” said Shanahan coach Nancy Roselli. “And believe in ourselves. We have really good chances against a team that are still in.”

VILLA MARIA 3, RADNOR 1 >> Lindsay Dickinson scored twice and Hannah Miller added the third as the Hurricanes reached the District 1 2A semifinal and locked up a state berth. Villa will host Merion Mercy on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Page Lowery dented the net for Radnor.

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 2, C.B. EAST 1 >> Tatum Johnson and Taylor Orsi scored the Whippets’ two goals as West locked up a state playoff spot and a spot in the District 1 3A semifinals.

West will play in Tuesday’s semifinal at Conestoga. Unionville and CB West will meet in the other semifinal.

The Whippets fell behind in the second half before Johnson and Orsi scored in rapid succession, both assisted by Romea Riccardo.

CONESTOGA 5, PLYMOUTH

WHITEMARSH 1 >> Meredith Ross had a hat trick and Charlotte de Vries added two more goals as the Pioneers (19-1) rolled into the District 1 3A semifinals and earned a state berth.

Conestoga will host Downingtow­n West Tuesday for a spot in the final.

EASTON 3, UNIONVILLE 2 >> The Indians swept the doubles but fell in the PIAA Class AAA Team semifinals at Hershey Racquet Club. Anna Nolan and Bailey Santiquida won, 6-4, 6-2 at first singles. Cara Freedman and Erin Felter grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 victory at second doubles.

NORTH ALLEGHENY 3, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 2 >> Anna Li earned a key victory at first singles as Northa Allegheny edged the Warriors in the semifinals of the PIAA Class AAA tournamen. Li edged Emma Clark, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Elania Rochford and Mary Soria dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, then won, 6-2, 6-3, at first doubles. Iswarya Vel and Jessica Liu captured second doubles in straight sets.
