VALLEY >> Rainbow Elementary School students, of the Coatesville Area School District, celebrated Halloween with friendly scares and an educational twist.

Rainbow Elementary hosted its annual “Fall Family Fun Fest.” It is also known as Literacy Night and Haunted Hallways. The event was held at the school on Thursday.

School officials said this event is “so loved” by the community, that former Rainbow students come back to participate as actors in the Haunted Hallways. They added that the Haunted Hallways are spooky, but if anyone feels too afraid, they can say “no scare” as they walk through for a less spooky experience.

The efforts of the Rainbow Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and staff volunteers ensured there would be something enjoyed by all visitors including the Haunted Hallways, the Scholastic Book Fair, storytelling, cupcake decorating, a movie screening and visits with Sawyer, a rescued golden retriever from PAWS.

“It was great to see that our students were still excited on Friday as they recalled the festivities of the previous evening,” Assistant Principal Lynn Mancinelli said. “Rainbow Elementary and our PTO are both very pleased to support literacy programs through this free community event.”

School officials noted that more than 900 visitors attended the free event. The PTO raised money by donations to have various goodies for sale and raffle tickets. In addition, Rainbow kicked off their annual food drive called “Operation Thanksgiving.” School officials noted that in the past, students have collected more than 2,000 cans for the drive. School officials said Rainbow will be accepting donations at the school until Nov. 18.
