‘The kids love it’
East Bradford couple hopes lights, and toys, bring joy to children in Chester County
For the past 10 years, Jerry and Jean Corrado have turned their home at 1102 Nobb Hill Drive into an oasis of Christmas lights and displays.
The couple uses the display to collect toys to be donated to children admitted to the emergency room and pediatrics unit
at Chester County Hospital.
In the first year, the couple collected 235 toys while last year they collected an amazing 1,162 toys.
The Corrados flipped the switch Thanksgiving night on this year’s display and will deliver the toys to the hospital on Christmas Eve.
If you are donating toys, look for the box labeled “toys” next to Santa Claus.
Jerry Corrado said they begin putting the lights up just after Halloween.
Corrado estimated there are 500 extension cords required for the display. He said they had a new 240volt electric box installed in the home to handle the power requirements.
He added that the high winds over the past week blew the decorations over, and he had to place orange strips to mark weather lines so he doesn’t trip when moving among the decorations. Another hazard is the small animals that chew the cords, shorting out displays.
“The five weeks that the lights are on costs $500,” Joan Corrado said. “But we love seeing people stopping. The kids love it.”
Despite the expense, the couple isn’t wasteful. She said the couple begin look- ing for decorations in January and pointed to the large balloon which they picked up for $25, 10 percent of its original asking price.
