Shirley Mae Koup of Malvern
Shirley Mae Koup (nee Glass) died peacefully after a brief illness at St. Martha Manor, Downingtown, PA, 19335, on December 18, 2016.
Born in Sunbury, PA on May 19, 1921, Shirley spent her early life on a farm near the Susquehanna River before moving with her family to Kingston, PA. At Kingston High School she excelled in basketball, swimming and scholastics. Shirley earned an academic scholarship to Bucknell but had to turn it down so she could help her family work their way through the Great Depression.
Shirley married Frederick Doyle Koup on January 3, 1944, shortly before he went off to Germany to fight as a ground troop with the United States 3rd Army. After he returned home from World War II he resumed his career as a pharmacist and they raised three sons and a daughter while residing in Paoli.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Doyle, and sons Howard and Charles.
Surviving are son Richard F. Koup (Carol) of Malvern and daughter Barbara Grace Turner (Thomas) of Great Mills, MD, along with six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Burial is private. A public memorial service in celebration of Shirley’s life is planned for January 7, 2017 at 11 am at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Devon, PA.
