Melton Center to host annual scholarship reception
WEST CHESTER >> The Melton Center will once again host the annual Charles A. Melton Scholarship Reception, where college students are honored and rewarded for their work both inside, and outside the classroom.
Starting at noon Dec. 31 and running until 2 p.m., the 28th annual scholarship reception will award college students from local church, civic, social, and educational institutions.
The cost of admission for the reception is $20 for adults and $5 for current high school or college students, and RSVPs can be made with Alice Thomas at 610-399-0955 or Korey Bell at 484-266-3403 or kbell1@wcasd.net.
College sophomores, juniors, and seniors may still submit an application for a book award from the Charles A. Melton Scholarship Fund. Applications can be obtained also be obtained from Bell or on the Melton Center website.
Last year, more than a dozen college students received scholarships to help with their studies. There, Cornell University student and West Chester East High School alumna Imani Luckey received the largest scholarship of $2,000.
Organizers for the event ask that attendees bring a contribution payable to the Charles A. Melton Scholarship Fund.
The Melton Community Center was named after Charles A. Melton for his dedication to the AfricanAmerican community including his work. According to the Melton Center’s website, he served as a spokesman for the African-American community from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.
